Mark Whitacre , es un tipo que pasa de intentar ascender en la importante empresa en que trabajaba, a denunciar prácticas corruptas dentro de la misma. Tras informar al FBI de la conspiración de su empresa para fijar precios a nivel multinacional, Withacre se contempla a sí mismo aclamado héroe y objeto de una recompensa. Pero antes, el FBI necesita pruebas. Así que se presta con entusiasmo a llevar una grabadora oculta en su maletín, imaginándose a sí mismo como una especie de agente secreto. Desafortunadamente para el FBI, lo más difícil de la misión consistirá en saber lo que es verdad y lo que es fruto de la gran imaginación de Withacre.
