Chicago, 1969. Stel je een wereld voor waarin je voor abortus een gevangenisstraf krijgt, en het verkrijgen van anticonceptie bijna onmogelijk is. Als gevolg hiervan sterven elke dag vrouwen die het heft in eigen handen nemen. Wanneer een zwangere student aan de Universiteit van Chicago probeert haar eigen leven te nemen, vinden Rose en Janice een arts die bereid is om de procedure in het geheim uit te voeren om het leven van de vrouw te redden. Door deze ervaring vormen Rose en Janice het Jane Collective: een geheime organisatie om andere vrouwen te helpen veilige en illegale abortussen te verkrijgen. Opererend als een spionagetwerk, compleet met blinddoeken en codenamen, helpen de Janes duizenden vrouwen - maar ze kunnen zich niet voor altijd verbergen voor de politie.
